Both a psychotherapist and a psychologist in Billund can help

Through talk therapy, both a psychotherapist and a psychologist in Billund can help you with your mental health, but their respective educations are different. A psychotherapist is primarily trained to talk with you to improve your mental health, and their training can therefore be very practically focused, whereas a psychologist is trained to a greater extent in psychological theories, diagnoses, and methods. Some psychologists undergo further training in psychotherapy, and the Danish Psychotherapist Association is currently introducing more and more psychological theory and diagnostic knowledge into psychotherapy training.

Unlike a psychologist in Billund, you cannot get a referral to a psychotherapist from your doctor, and the health insurance company "Danmark" does not subsidize psychotherapy. Psychologists often have waiting lists, and their prices are generally a few hundred kroner higher than those of psychotherapists for self-paying patients. Prices for individual therapy with psychologists typically start at around DKK 950, whereas prices for psychotherapists start at around DKK 650 (glads.dk). Health insurance companies have increasingly begun to use psychotherapists for their customers. Similarly, some municipalities and doctors have also begun to suggest psychotherapy to citizens in order to avoid waiting lists. Unlike "psychologist," "psychotherapist" is not a protected title, so it may be a good idea to ensure that your psychotherapist has the MPF quality stamp from the Danish Psychotherapist Association.

Psychologists and psychotherapists can offer different types of therapy. Read more about the different approaches here.

Psychotherapist vs psychologist in Google searches

Nationally, there are almost twice as many Google searches per month for "psychologist" compared to "psychotherapist". Similarly, I find that the term "psychologist" is better established across generations compared to "psychotherapist". I am often asked what a psychotherapist can do. Finally, the term "psychotherapy student" is searched close to zero times on average per month nationwide (data from 07.08.2024).

In addition to a psychotherapist and a psychologist in Billund, you can also get help from a psychotherapy student

During the last half of the program, psychotherapy students are required to provide therapy sessions to build experience while working closely with their teachers and receiving supervision. Supervision for the students means that they present some sequences from a client conversation that they want to get feedback or sparring on. For the client, it means that the student can bring new perspectives from an expert to the next therapy session.

Therapy with a psychotherapy student typically costs 300-400 SEK for 45-60 minutes.

Students are approved to have clients in therapy as they have passed the necessary exams in their programs and have several hours of practical experience from training with fellow students and teachers. In addition, many psychotherapists come from professions such as educators, teachers, nurses or people leaders who have additional counseling experience (source: Danish Psychotherapist Association).

A psychotherapy student can therefore offer mental health assistance at a reduced price while building up their professional experience and expanding their professional repertoire.
